FSW - Friction Stir Welding und
FSSW - Friction Stir Spot Welding

introduction

During the network of competence of joining technology JOIN a state of the art FSW-plant by MTS was purchased and put into operation in march 2006 at the institute of material science and welding technology at the Technical University in Graz. Together with different Austrian manufacturing companies, basic research (metallurgy, flow of material, attributes) but also development of methods (f.e. new concepts of tools, - self reacting pin tool) and appliance (especially for new materials) is held. Furthermore, there is work put into modelling and simulation of the process.

The following are methods presently being examined:

  • rub-stir welding, Friction Stir Welding (FSW)

  • rub-stir spot welding, Friction Stir Spot Welding (FSSW)

machine-data

MTS ISTIR BR4

This is a hydraulic-pursued portal-application which was laid out as 2D production and research system.

Weldings are possible in the mode for strength and path control.
